Best Of 2012

Happy New Year everyone! With me finally being able to play (almost) every promising game last year, here are the greatest gaming experiences I had in 2012.
There wasn’t as big and great of a blockbuster like Uncharted 3 2011 but that aside 2012 still has been one of the greatest year for games. Games obviously are getting better and better and each new year we have the chance to witness that.

Journey (PS3)

Not just the most beautiful game ever created but also the greatest gaming experience I ever had so far. The first time I had bonded with a complete stranger (or rather several strangers) without ever communicating, pressing one button aside. It literally can’t be put into words.

The Walking Dead (PC)

Heavy Rain promised to change gaming in 2009. While it did advance the medium, unfortunately no one did follow. Until now, when more projects finally seem to pick up on that kind of experience (less boring mechanics, more story and experience). And while overall Heavy Rain obviously is still the better game, there never has been an interactive work of art like The Walking Dead regarding player choices. No choice had any real impact but just the implications of those choices alone were more bold and difficult than anything we have ever seen in this medium.

The Unfinished Swan (PS3)

Farcry 3 (PC)

A new generation of open world games has started. Right beside Red Dead Redemption, easily the best one out there. Didn’t expect anything and was blown away. Almost never really feels like an open world game but a great told linear experience. As with every great game, this one also has many flaws and could have been a real masterpiece if it wasn’t just another 1st person shooter (Have the first two hours of the game filled with fun activities instead of a gun, etc.). Just imagine this game made by Naughty Dog. But for what it is – a mainstream action game, it’s pretty amazing.

Deadlight (PC)

Max Payne 3 (PS3)

Assassins Creed 3 (PC)

World building always trumped pure game mechanics for me. Mechanics is what makes (most) games boring. In the end unfortunately a very “gamy” game (constant loading screens, dumb gui overlays, you never really feel you’re not in a videogame) but the setting and main characters are just so cool. Probably will be the first Assassin’s Creed which I will finish.

Best indie games: Closure, Lone Survivor, Trine 2

Overhyped or bad: Dishonored, Borderlands 2, Halo 4, Mass Effect 3

Now onto the greatest year in gaming yet (and hopefully a lot of new stuff for WoD?! ;o)),…
